EF# 14: Symptoms, Root Causes and Fertility Effects of Histamine Intolerance

Itchy skin due to Histamine Intolerance
If you have a plethora of unexplainable symptoms from dizziness and nausea to anxiety and headaches then it could be HISTAMINE INTOLERANCE (HIT).
Many women with Endometriosis are prone to suffer from allergies and HIT. Research has found a strong correlation between allergies, Endo and autoimmune diseases.
The most important fact is that HIT can affect your FERTILITY, though the relationship and details on how allergies, Endo and fertility are unknown.
What we do know, is that:
📌 ESTROGEN causes an increase in histamine, especially around ovulation, and it also ‘down-regulates’ (reduces) DAO – the enzyme that is responsible for reducing our histamine.
📌 PROGESTERONE up-regulates (increases) DAO, so we can clear histamine – which is why you might feel better just after ovulation.
SO….if you have high estrogen and low progesterone (i.e. estrogen dominance)…many women with Endo do….then you are likely to have too much histamine, never mind if you are eating a diet that is inflammatory or high in histamines, or have poor gut health or genetic mutations that may affect how you deal with histamines.
In recent weeks, it has dawned on me that I have histamine intolerance and that I am having an ‘episode’ at the moment that I need to deal with and get to the root of why some of these symptoms are returning.
It is absolutely key for my fertility – as having too many histamines in your body result in inflammation, high numbers of cytokines in my uterus, which does not appear to aid in an embryo being able to attach to the uterine lining.

In Episode 13, Ashley Looft, from Whole Happy Healthy Life, shared with us her experience with Histamine Intolerance (HIT). This episode follows on from that, to dive deep into what the symptoms are, to what the potential root causes are and what you can do to help your body heal.

Here are some of the episode highlights:

  • Symptoms of Histamine Intolerance
  • What histamines are
  • Why high levels of histamines are a problem
  • “The cup of water” analogy to the cumulative build-up of histamines
  • Why you might get a build-up in histamine
  • 8 root causes of histamine intolerance
  • Histamine intolerance and Endometriosis
  • The relationship between histamine and fertility
  • Approach to reducing Histamine Intolerance

This includes how I have only recently realised that I have Histamine Intolerance, and how I connected the dots with all the symptoms.
