EF#25: Using Heart Rate Monitors to reduce Endo Pelvic Pain

Dr Jessica Drummond smiling

My guest today is Dr. Jessica Drummond, the CEO of The Integrative Women’s Health Institute (IWHI) in the US, and author of Outsmart Endometriosis. Jessica agreed to come back after our first interview for Episode 9 on the gut and nervous system, as we touched upon the use of heart rate monitors to assist with Endometriosis, and I wanted to know more!

Jessica explained the importance of a calm nervous system in managing pain signals, before we got stuck into how Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and resting heart rate are great tools that can be used to understand your overall health, stress levels, sleep quality and quantity, and fitness – all of which can be used in an approach to reduce pelvic pain from Endometriosis, recover from chronic illnesses such as chronic fatigue or COVID. These are all measures of your overall health and you can see how this improves over time, which is then directly linked to your fertility. Measuring HRV has become so much more accessible and is something you could be doing right now!

Here are some of the episode highlights:

  • Nervous system and how pelvic pain and tension affects the status of the nervous system
  • Pain management and safety signals
  • What Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is and how it is measured
  • How HRV can be used to measure our stress
  • How HRV can be used to manage our pelvic pain
  • What the resting heart rate is and how this differs from HRV
  • Whether HRV can be used to determine if the body is overloaded with xenoestrogens
  • Gut microbiome and bowel movements
  • Jessica’s experience with COVID and her recovery and use of HRV with this
  • My crazy high heart rates with chronic fatigue and Endometriosis
  • Resting heart rate as a measure of ovulation during the menstrual cycle.
