Gut-Healing Gummies

I’ve been playing with making gelatin sweets in these cute heart, shell and teddy bear moulds. They are easy to make and you can flavour any way you like. Organic grass-fed gelatin is fantastic at healing poor and leaky guts, which is typical for Endometriosis and other inflammatory and auto-immune conditions.

I have made a variety of different flavours, one of my favourites are a combination of hibiscus tea and fresh strawberry topped with chocolate nut milk!! My little toddler loves them!

Who needs to have an excuse to eat tasty sweets that aren’t laden with sugar and are good for you! The other option is bone broth – which is equally delicious and great for making soups with!

Health Benefits

So why should you include grass-fed gelatin in your diet? Well it is full of protein, and if you want a healthy protein powder opt for this – none of the unhealthy ones you can buy from the gym!

Here are some of the amazing benefits:

  • It helps heal the gastrointestinal wall lining –  by coating it and reducing inflammation.
  • Improve digestion as it draws gastric juices to it.
  • Helps joints and cartilage health
  • It contains amazing amino acids, including proline and glycine.

If you are a meat-eater, it is likely you only eat the ‘muscle’. Time gone by we ate far more, using bones and cartilage to make bone broths and eating organ meat. The muscle meat contains the least beneficial nutrients and includes an amino acid called tryptophan – which is inflammatory. If you want to know more, read this great article by Chris Kresser for the benefits.

By buying a good quality grass-fed collagen powder you can incorporate all the goodness without having to eat parts that you are not comfortable with. You are also consuming amino acids that are not inflammatory.

Great Lakes Gelatin

So which one should you buy?

There are two different types of gelatin powder; regular gelatin and collagen hydrolysate. Gelatin is made up of collagen and makes anything you put in it jelly like. Collagen hydrolysate has no taste and does not make liquids form a jelly, so is no good for making gummies but it is great for adding to smoothies, yoghurt, tea and coffee etc. This article by Butter Believer provides lots of detail on what to look for when buying gelatin.

The key thing you want to remember is you need to make sure you buy grass-fed in order to ensure you get maximum benefit.

I use The Great Lakes Unflavoured Gelatin, but this is in fact not available in the UK anymore and if you can find it, it has now doubled in price, so I wouldn’t recommend this unless you are in Canada or the US. Im still on the hunt for a new brand and will update you when I have found one!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Pureed fruit e.g. strawberry, raspberry, blueberry or mango
  • 1 cup Liquid e.g. filtered water, coconut water or milk
  • 2 tbsp Honey or Stevia granules
  • 6 tbsp Gelatin powder

Instructions

  • Place pureed fruit into a bowl for easy pouring
  • In a small saucepan whisk liquid with gelatin over low heat until dissolved. Do not boil
  • Pour gelatin into pureed fruit and whisk to prevent the gelatin setting in clumps
  • Add honey or stevia at this stage.
  • Pour mixture into moulds and place in the fridge for 15 minutes.

Notes

  1. You could add extra probiotic powder, protein powder, vanilla powder, bee pollen or maca - your choice!!
  2. Do note the mixture tastes a lot sweeter before it sets - so if you think it tastes too sweet - don't worry it doesn't taste as sweet once they are set!
  3. You can freeze them and they don't take long to defrost either! I find this is a great way to keep them - as you can then make this big batch and freeze. Otherwise, you need to eat them within 3-4 days when stored in the fridge.
